When Design Aligns" Design Exhibit Animation

A 3D brand animation for a student design exhibition, using a disassembled Rubik’s cube to visualize the exhibit theme “When Design Aligns.”

Context

This animation was created for a student design exhibition built around the theme “When Design Aligns.” The group’s brand concept used a Rubik’s cube as the central metaphor, representing separate creative parts coming together into a cohesive whole.

Challenge

The animation needed to support the exhibition identity and work as a clean landing-page motion piece. It had to feel polished enough for a public-facing event while staying clear, minimal, and directly connected to the brand concept.

Approach

I interpreted the cube as a modular system. Individual cube pieces and stickers fall into frame, rotate around the center, and assemble into a mixed Rubik’s cube before breaking apart again. The motion reinforces the exhibit theme through timing, alignment, and transformation rather than literal explanation.

Implementation

The scene was animated in Blender using a staged 3D setup with custom lighting, materials, colors, camera composition, and keyframed motion. The final loop was rendered with Cycles on a clean white/gray background, then assembled from rendered frames.

Conclusion

This became a strong brand touchpoint for the exhibition because it translated the theme into motion rather than treating the cube as a static icon. The final piece feels clean, dimensional, and system-driven, while still carrying enough visual energy to work at the top of the exhibit website.
